 Burkina Faso Cuts Diplomatic Ties With France Amid Deepening Rift

Burkina Faso has officially severed diplomatic relations with France, marking a major turning point in the already strained relationship between the two countries. The announcement was made on national television by Communications Minister Gilbert Ouedraogo, who said the decision took immediate effect following a government review of bilateral relations.

According to the Burkinabe government, the conditions necessary to maintain diplomatic ties—mutual respect, reciprocal trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and respect for national sovereignty—are no longer present. Officials accused France of persistently acting against Burkina Faso's national interests and alleged that Paris supports "subversive networks" and "terrorists" operating in the country and across the Sahel region. France has repeatedly denied accusations that it supports terrorist groups. 

The decision represents the latest escalation in deteriorating relations between Burkina Faso and its former colonial power. Since the military-led government headed by Ibrahim Traoré took power in 2022, the country has pursued a more independent foreign policy, reduced its cooperation with France, and strengthened ties with new international partners. French troops and diplomats had already departed Burkina Faso as relations worsened over recent years. 

Despite the diplomatic break, Burkina Faso emphasized that its decision applies only to official state-to-state diplomatic relations and does not affect the historical, cultural, or social ties between the peoples of Burkina Faso and France. The government also said it would continue to protect French citizens and their interests within Burkina Faso while urging the public to remain calm and respect the law. 

France has condemned the move as hostile and rejected the allegations made by Burkina Faso, with French officials indicating that reciprocal measures are under consideration. 

The diplomatic rupture is expected to have significant implications for regional security cooperation, foreign aid, and geopolitical dynamics in the Sahel, where Burkina Faso continues to battle armed extremist groups alongside neighboring countries.
